The Baltimore Ravens are making a change. According to a report from ESPN, the Ravens are firing offensive coordinator Marc Trestman and replacing him with quarterbacks coach Marty Mornhinweg. The report was later confirmed by CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora.
Through five weeks, the Ravens rank 23rd in both yards per game and points per game. They scored just 10 points in a loss to Washington on Sunday to drop their record to 3-2.
The Ravens later confirmed the move.
Coach John Harbaugh also released a statement.
Trestman took the offensive coordinator job with Baltimore in early 2015 after spending two years as the head coach of the Chicago Bears. The Bears went 8-8 and then 5-11 in his two seasons before he was fired. Baltimore, amid several injuries and ineffectiveness from numerous starters, finished Trestman's first season ranked 14th in yards and 25th in points.
Mornhinweg has been coaching in the NFL since 2005, mostly as an offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach, though he was the head coach of the Detroit Lions from 2001 to 2002, during which time he went 5-27. He spent 2003 to 2012 working under Andy Reid with the Philadelphia Eagles, then was the Jets' offensive coordinator during the final two years of the Rex Ryan era before taking the quarterbacks coach job in Baltimore.
As La Canfora wrote on Monday morning, there was mounting frustration in Baltimore about the team abandoning the run, not calling many vertical routes, and super conservative third-down play calling.
The Ravens rank 17th in rushing attempts in 2016 and tied for 13th in yards per carry.Joe Flacco, whose strength has long been viewed as throwing the ball down the field, has attempted to throw the ball at least 20 yards in the air on only 10.2 percent of his passes, per Pro Football Focus, which ranks 23rd among qualified quarterbacks. (It should be noted that this percentage is almost exactly identical to his percentage from 2014, his best NFL season.)
Baltimore has a third-down conversion rate of just 35.5 percent, which ranks 24th in the NFL through five weeks.
